So, what’s my story?

My story starts with poop.  Yeah, I said it, poop…or rather…the lack thereof.  As far back as I can remember, I was always severely constipated. I missed days of grade school, I recall my father carrying me from my neighbor’s home, back to my own, due to no success after an ample amount of time on the pot.  It doesn’t help that constipation was normalized in my family (my mom made a laminated out-of-order sign for the toilet.  Thankfully, we had two restrooms).  So, there we go…got that one out of the way.  Expect full disclosure here folks.

All my life, nobody asked me about my bowel movements.  (you might be thinking…”duh! and why would they?”).  For the simple reason that BM’s give us major insight into how our bodies are functioning…or – not functioning.

Around age 21, I developed my first migraine – Holy S+++!!!  After a visit to the ER,  an intake of my symptoms led to a shot of Demerol later, and a prescription of Midrin. I was sent home to vomit, rest & repeat this cycle.  I was treated with medication and absolutely NO EDUCATION & NO SUPPORT.  So, I thought…I am now a person who suffers from migraines, that’s just how it is.  I bought into that belief system for 13 more years.

Fortunately, I was introduced to an acupuncturist by a holistic friend.  When the student is ready, the teacher appears.  And thus began my journey of healing.  A big part of my treatment was looking closer at my diet & tuning into my beliefs so that I could make decisions around food that served my body, rather than wreaking havoc on it.  I started to undo the thought patterns that kept me stuck (literally & figuratively).  This work woke me up inside.  The changes I experienced excited me & gave me hope.  I can heal my body.  I can conquer these ailments.  My acupuncturist called me his “little grasshopper.”

How did I get into health coaching?

I’ve always been told that I am an “old soul” and that I’m good at helping people.  In 2004, I finally listened and went back to school to obtain a Masters in Social Work. This led to my work in the HIV field, where I’ve case managed clients around their health and life goals for over 8 years.  It was during this time that I conquered my migraines.

I couldn’t help but to spend my free time researching nutrition and learning more about the body.   Delving further into holistic health, I discovered the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, where I studied and obtained my certification in Health Coaching.  The school exposed me to more than one hundred dietary theories and a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods.  I truly believe that the body is capable of healing itself by itself, if given the right support.

What is transformational coaching?

I went on to study at HolisticMBA for my certification in the Transformational Coaching Method.  This work helps people to dream big and to step into their true desires (to get unstuck).  It opens people up to the possibility of what life has to offer and to let go of limiting beliefs.
